I am thrilled to report that the first annual Staten
Island takedown tournament and barbecue was a huge success!
It was a sun drenched 70 degrees with a steady breeze,
which made for ideal outdoor wrestling conditions! The
parents set their beach chairs out mat-side and watched
their kids while soaking up the sun and eating from
the BBQ. The event ran from 9:30 to 2:30 and brought
a festive summer kickoff atmosphere while raising thousands
of dollars for Autism Speaks.
The winners of the grand prize, box seats to
a Yankee-Red Sox game were:
- Kids division, Joe Trovato of Montclair, New Jersey
- High School/open division, Sean Messina of West
Islip, NY
We also raffled off a Mets gift bag, Beat The Streets
merchandise and baseballs autographed by Alex Rodriguez,
Derek Jeter, Don Mattingly, Jorge Posada and Monte Irvin,
courtesy of the New York Yankees.
Some other highlights of the day:
- Three-style All American and Bloomsburg coach Carl
Fronhofer put on a free clinic for the kids.
- The outdoor basketball courts were covered in wrestling
mats (a beautiful sight!)
- Cadet Greco All American Matt Cartusciello hooked
his laptop up to the speakers and surrounded us with
great music all day.
- The famous Joe Cipriano grill, which is known for
delighting the 2004 women’s Olympic Team and
contingent.
- The ultimate grudge match between the coaches of
the top two Staten Island teams, much to the entertainment
and delight of their wrestlers.
- Wrestling’s finest going above and beyond
the mats for the benefit of the kids that need us,
while showing the community what we are really all
about!
Here is what some of the athletes and parents had
to say:
“great time at event. Wrestled outside (got a
sunburn). very relaxed. tournament was fast. We were
also there for a good cause. Cannot wait till next year!”
“Event was a blast. Thanks for putting it on and
good luck with the organization!”
“I had a blast, my son had a blast... we will
be back in #s next year!”
Special thanks to:
- The Lenny Ingrassia Heart of a Lion Foundation and
the Ingrassia Family.
- Beat The Streets
- Plastic-Craft Products
- Richmond County Savings Foundation
- New York Yankees
- The wrestlers, parents and coaches, who all contributed
to this event.
We all look forward to bigger and better for next year!
